Cute chipmunk (Picture 1)

The chipmunk is much smaller than the squirrel. They all weigh approximately 100 grams and have an average lifespan of 5-10 years. They are diurnal animals. Adults have a body length of 110-150 mm, a tail length close to the body length, a light yellow or orange red hair on the back, and five dark brown longitudinal stripes, so it is called "five eyebrows" and is a distinguishing feature from other squirrels . The longitudinal lines extend from the back of the eyebrows to the hips. The body hair is orange yellow, the belly hair is white, and the hair base is gray. Chipmunks are mostly distributed in North America. Only the Siberian chipmunk is distributed in northeastern Europe and northern Asia.

Chipmunks inhabit forest areas and forest margins of shrubs and low-lying hills, and dig holes in the rhizosphere of trees and shrubs, or use terraced ridges and burrows between natural stones. Many activities during the day, the most active in the morning and evening, often running on the ground and fallen wood, also good at climbing trees, agile movements, from time to time make a scream. It feeds on various nuts, seeds, berries, flowers, and young leaves, as well as small amounts of adult and young insects. Have the habit of storing food. Hibernate. Breeding begins in early spring. The pregnancy period is about 1 month, and 1-2 litters are born each year, with 4-6 litters per litter, with a maximum of 10 litters.

The chipmunk eats a lot of food, and it is harmful to beans, wheat, cereals and fruits. Invaded the farmland in spring to dig and eat the seeds of the planted crops. In autumn, the cheek pouches are used to smuggle a large amount of grain. The grain in a warehouse can reach 5-10 kg. It also climbed to the tree to steal walnuts, apricots, apples, pears and so on. Due to the lack of memory of the food storage area, it has played a role of "seeding" to a certain extent.

Most chipmunks inhabit underground burrows, nest in tree holes and even invade nest boxes that artificially attract beneficial birds. The cave can be divided into two types: spring and summer caves and wintering caves: spring and summer caves have no grain storage room, the nest is shallow, and some have the shortest vertical distance from the ground of about 10 cm, and some are 30-50 cm. The elders can reach two or three meters, and there are 1-8 holes, the hole is less than 50×50 mm, and raises young animals in this hole. The wintering cave usually has a grain storage room, the tunnel is deep, and the vertical distance from the ground is about 90 cm or deeper. There are often shelters at the entrance of the cave, and hollow fallen wood, rock gaps, pine caves or earth caves are used as temporary hidden places nearby.
