China's Three Gorges Dam

China's Three Gorges Dam (Picture 1)

The Three Gorges Dam, located in Sandouping Town, Yichang City, Hubei Province, China, is 38 kilometers away from the downstream Gezhouba Hydropower Project. It is the main project of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station, the core landscape of the Three Gorges Dam tourist area, the largest hydropower project in the world today, The eastern end of the Three Gorges Reservoir. The Three Gorges Dam project includes two parts: the main building and the diversion project. The total length is about 3335m and the dam height is 185 meters. The total investment of the project is 95.46 billion yuan. The construction was officially started on December 14, 1994 and May 20, 2006. The whole line was successfully constructed.

The dam of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station is 185 meters high, the normal water storage level is 175 meters, and the reservoir is 2335 meters long. The static investment is 135.266 billion yuan, and 32 hydropower units with a single unit capacity of 700,000 kilowatts are installed. The last hydropower unit of the Three Gorges Power Station was put into operation on July 4, 2012. This means that the Three Gorges Hydropower Station, with an installed capacity of 22.4 million kilowatts, has become the world’s largest hydroelectric power station and clean energy production base on July 4, 2012. . In December 2015, the Three Gorges Dam was selected as one of the 30 best new tourist attractions in the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River.

Approved by the National Defense Administration, the Three Gorges Reservoir officially launched the fourth 175-meter test storage at 0:00 on September 10, 2011. By 19:00 on the 18th, the water level of the reservoir had reached 160.18 meters. On July 23, 2012, the Three Gorges Project opened seven flood discharge deep holes for flood discharge. The upstream water flow surged to 46,000 cubic meters per second. On July 24, 2012, the inflow of the Three Gorges Dam reached 71,200 cubic meters per second, which was the largest flood peak encountered since the construction of the Three Gorges Reservoir.

The Three Gorges Project is by far the most comprehensive water conservancy project in the world, and it is exerting huge flood control and shipping benefits. After the completion of the Three Gorges Dam, a 600-kilometer-long reservoir was formed, and the water was stored in stages, making it a rare new landscape in the world. After the completion of the project, the normal storage level of the reservoir is 175 meters, the flood control storage capacity is 22.15 billion cubic meters, and the total storage capacity is 39.3 billion cubic meters. It can give full play to its key backbone role in the flood control system of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and will significantly improve the Yangtze River from Yichang to Yichang. Chongqing's 660-kilometer waterway, the 10,000-ton-class fleet can directly reach Chongqing Port, which will give full play to the ten major benefits of flood control, power generation, shipping, aquaculture, tourism, south-to-north water transfer, water supply and irrigation.

Since September 25, 2014, the Three Gorges Dam tourist attractions will be free of charge for Chinese tourists (including compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese). The tourist attractions covered by the ticket for free include Tanziling Park, 185 viewing platform, and closure memorial park. After entering the Three Gorges Dam area, tourists need to pass the security check at the tourist transfer center and transfer to the scenic sightseeing bus to visit the scenic spots. Compared with the previous time when tickets were collected, the way tourists visit, sights and routes remain basically unchanged. Scenic transportation services are paid services. Real-name reservations are required, and the maximum number of tourists in a single day is 40,000.
