Yunnan Stone Forest, World Geopark (Picture 1)

Yunnan Stone Forest Global Geopark is located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China. It covers a total area of 400 square kilometers, with a special protection area of 44.96 square kilometers, a first-level protection area of 62.10 square kilometers, a second-level protection area of 107.21 square kilometers, and a third-level protection. The area is 135.73 square kilometers. It is between 1500 meters and 1900 meters above sea level and 78 kilometers away from Kunming, the provincial capital. It is known as the "No. 1 Wonder in the World" and the "Stone Forest Museum". Yunnan Stone Forest Global Geopark is also one of the first batch of China's national key scenic spots, China National Geopark, and Global Geopark. It is as famous as the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an, and the landscape of Guilin. Stone Forest was named the first batch of national key scenic spots in 1982, the first batch of national geological parks in 2001, the first batch of national 5A tourist attractions in 2008, and was listed in the world by UNESCO in June 2007 On the heritage list, Stone Forest was awarded the "Science Popularization Education Base of Yunnan Province" by the Yunnan Provincial Government in 2003, and became the "Science Popularization Base of Land Resources" by the Ministry of Land and Resources in 2011.

Due to the ancient, complex, multi-phased and rare nature of its development and evolution, as well as the diversity of landscape morphology, Yunnan Stone Forest has become a typical example of such karst geomorphological relics in the world and the origin of the word "Stone Forest". It has a high general value of tourism science. Yunnan Stone Forest preserves and displays the most diverse karst forms. Tall sword-shaped, columnar, mushroom-shaped, and tower-shaped limestone pillars are typical representatives of stone forests. In addition, there are karst hills, depressions, funnels, underground rivers, karst caves, and stone forests. Buds, stalactites, dissolution lakes, natural bridges, cliff waterfalls, cone-shaped peaks, etc., almost all karst forms in the world are concentrated here, forming a panoramic view of karst geology and landforms.

Yunnan Stone Forest is a masterpiece of the earth's evolution, which has undergone nearly 300 million years of vicissitudes. The original limestone was formed in the sea. Later, due to the changes in the crust, the ocean became land and the flat land became high mountain. The limestone was also unimaginably shaped into a stone forest landform. During this period, the stone forest was baked by hot volcanic lava and submerged by vast lakes. The formation of the stone forest is a true geological legend. The stone forest is formed under favorable geological, climatic and hydrological conditions. The soluble rock—carbonate rock is cut by more than two sets of vertical fissures, and then dissolved along the fissures by water and organisms. As the ditch deepens and widens, The stone pillars are separated and become the wonders of the stone forest in various forms.

The unique and complete series of stone forest karst landforms, karst cave landforms, geological historical sites, vegetation community series, folk customs, ethnic culture, etc. unique to Yunnan Stone Forest Geopark have attracted tens of millions of domestic visitors due to its convenient and accessible traffic conditions and sound development and management. , International tourists, among them are ordinary people, teenagers and children, but also famous scientists, social activists and politicians. The scientific management knowledge and experience of the Stone Forest Geopark, including the evolution of the earth, the formation process of geology and landforms, the unique characteristics of the karst area, and the coordinated resource utilization mode of man and land, are disseminated through Stone Forest tourism and inspection activities. Among all the stone forest karst protected areas and parks discovered and developed, the Stone Forest Geopark is unique. This shows its educational science value.
